Skateboarding is still, these days, perceived as cool and hip, after its inception and explosion of popularity in the 80s. Skating - on roller skates or blades - is still seen as less groovy, but this fun sport is making a comeback, if indeed it ever went away.

The Snoopy and Big Bird-themed roller skates you remember from childhood have been replaced by state-of-the-art boots, designed in careful precision and with every bolt, joint, greaseless bearings and bit carefully engineered and put in pace to help give you speed and aerodynamic movement - not the clunkiness and chunkiness you remember.

Skating in this old skool style is therefore making a comeback, and there are a number of festivals around the world which cater to the skater - the 4-wheeled hipster rather than the board-boy or babe - as well as, of course, your local skating rink (rather than park, which is where the skateboarders usually hang out).

Calgary Roller Skate

Every June, lovers of 8-wheeled action gather in Calgary and take part in demos, races, dances, workshops, and enjoy general fun times together. The event features national and international professional skaters as well as lessons for those who’ve never skated before or who feel unsteady on their feet.

Skate Love Barcelona

Show some real skate love and head to the vibrant city of Barcelona for your 8-wheel fix! Under sunshine, by the sea, and surrounded by incredible Gaudi architecture, you can freewheel, dance, and jive to your heart’s content. This festival takes place in May each year, and also includes music in the form of bands and DJs.

Skate San Francisco
In July, you can grab some San Fran sun and spirit and take part in the skate festival which takes place over a full, fine, fab four days. Events include The Church of 8 Wheels - a roller disco, essentially, but featuring the hottest DJs - and a Skaters’ Showcase which takes place in the gorgeous Golden Gate Park.

Eastbourne Skate Festival

This festival is another goody for anyone who loves to skate! It takes place in England and involved a huge roller disco which takes place outdoors. As well as this, there’s a beachside BBQ, stalls, and lots of fun and family-friendly activities. It occurs in July.

In addition to these larger events, remember that there may be a bespoke or dedicated roller skate park or, more likely, indoor rink nearby just waiting for your use. If you’ve not skated for years, or never skated at all, you can hire skates there, usually. This fun activity is a great way to make new friends as well as increase your fitness in a very gentle way.

So, what are you waiting for? It’s time to get skating!
